2 Weeks on a Sailboat: Queen Charlotte Sound

NOLS Course

Milford Sound

Recommend doing single-day over multi-day, as you cover the same area. For multi-day, highly recommend Doubtful Sound.

2nd time here, many more waterfalls flowing than first time. Saw some sea lions. The drive there / back had some great views, rivers, and waterfalls.

Doubtful Sound

The underrated sister of Milford Sound. A lot less crowded, just as beautiful. I enjoyed the overnight here.

  • Fish to table dinner

  • Dolphins

  • Penguins

  • Kayaking + Waterfalls

Routeburn Day Hike

Gorgeous scenery. 2nd time doing this. Rainy -> all waterfalls full

Roadtrip: Queenstown -> Nelson

  • Clay Cliffs

  • Mt. Cook Village - Tasman Glacier

  • Lake Tekapo

  • Maruia Hot Springs

  • Greymouth: Coal Creek Falls, Brunner Mine Site

  • Motukiekie Beach Walk - super cool / empty, access during low tide only

  • Punakaiki Rocks - go during high tide! Powerful blow holes

  • Bicycle Wine Tasting in Renwick

Kayak / Backpacking Abel Tasman

My favorite trek of this trip!

Rented kayaks, read tide charts, planned route so we could explore places by boat during high tide, stop whenever we pleased. Tons of seals, circumnavigated small islands of seals.
